One of my favorite things to do is take old hymns and re-style them for contemporary singing. It’s nothing new, really. People have always done this. Hitting the refresh button on a hymn to bring the contents of a great lyric into a modern worship setting is a practice that goes back as long as the Church has been around. Mind you, this is not an attempt to improve upon the original. In general, that is very hard to do. Here’s my latest contribution. I’d love your feedback on this rough arrangement and mix. Thanks.
Holy God, We Praise Thy Name
Text by Ignaz Franz, circa 1774, translated from German to English by Clarence Walworth in 1858.
This is a beautiful hymn that didn’t need any alteration. I opened my Celebration Hymnal up to the first two hymns and, almost without thinking, this is what I put together for Holy God, We Praise Thy Name. I’ll post something for the other hymn later.
